Desk Research: Navigating the Korean Stock Market as an Expat in Korea

This post is a curated desk research report specifically designed for expats living in South Korea as I mentioned in the previous article.

As of January 2026, we are witnessing a historic moment: the KOSPI has finally breached the 5,000-point mark, delivering record-breaking returns. However, as the government’s “Value-up” drive and large-cap stocks take a momentary breather this week, many market experts are forecasting a KOSDAQ “Catch-up Rally.” To truly capitalize on this, investors need to look beyond the major indices. The real momentum is flowing into:

  • Advanced Tech: ESS (Energy Storage Systems), AI Robotics, and Solid-state batteries.
  • Commodity Rebound: Secondary batteries catching a tailwind from lithium price stabilization.
  • New Frontiers: The recently legalized STO (Security Token Offerings) and the rise of stablecoins.
  • Infrastructure: Power equipment and specialized semiconductor components/materials (소부장).

Selecting individual winners in these volatile sectors can be daunting for any investor. The safest strategy is to trade Sector-specific ETFs or KOSDAQ Index ETFs. To do this effectively and access real-time data on institutional flows, having a domestic Korean brokerage app is no longer optional—it is essential.

Why Use a Domestic MTS? More Than Just Stocks

Setting up a local Mobile Trading System (MTS) gives you “Superpowers” that foreign apps often lack:

  • ETF Versatility: Trade specialized ETFs that cover the exact sectors mentioned above (ESS, Robotics, Bio, etc.) which are not always available on international platforms.
  • Institutional Intelligence: Access real-time Supply and Demand (수급) data. You can see exactly what “Smart Money” (Institutional and Foreign investors) is buying or selling every day.
  • Market Momentum Tools: Easily track New 52-Week Highs (52주 신고가) and Trading Volume Rankings to find where the “Hidden Gems” are hiding.
  • Modern Infrastructure: Benefit from the NXT (Nextrade) ATS and SOR (Smart Order Routing) for the best execution prices.

Brokerage Comparison Table (2026)

Securities Firm English Website English HTS (PC) English MTS (Mobile)
Samsung Securities Official Site Yes (Dedicated) Yes (to-be-chekcked)
Mirae Asset Official Site No (Korean Only) No (Integrated)
Shinhan Securities Official Site No (Korean Only) No (Dedicated App)

1. Samsung Securities (삼성증권)

Samsung is currently the gold standard for expats because they provide a standalone English HTS.

2. Mirae Asset Securities (미래에셋증권)

Mirae Asset offers the most polished mobile experience. Their M-STOCK app is highly responsive to global macro news.

3. Shinhan Securities (신한투자증권)

Shinhan is famous for its Global Center support and has recently optimized its SOL platforms for international users.

[Essential Tip] The “Name Verification” Barrier

Before you install, remember this: Your name on your ARC (Alien Registration Card) must match your mobile phone contract exactly.

  • If your ARC says: DOE JOHN JAMES
  • But your phone says: DOE JOHN
  • Result: Online account opening will fail. Ensure these match before you start.

What’s Next? (Personal Update)

While the above reflects my current desk research, I know that real-world experience is what matters most.

This week, I will be personally calling the customer service centers of these brokerages to consult on the latest 2026 requirements for foreigners and clarify any hurdles in the “non-face-to-face” account opening process.

A Quick Note on Toss (토스): I am aware that many of you already use Toss Bank because it allows foreigners to open a bank account online (non-face-to-face). However, my preliminary research suggests that Toss Securities does not yet allow foreigners to open brokerage accounts online, and the app may lack English support for trading.

After reaching out this week to confirm these details and will include them in my follow-up report. I’ll also be installing all the HTS and MTS programs mentioned above to verify their English UI and search functions. Stay tuned!
